HC Deb 21 March 1918 vol 104 cc1197-8W
Sir J. D. REES

asked the Minister of National Service whether Mr. M'Dougall and his subordinates, who are of military age, still occupy the posts of Commissioner and Assistant-Commissioners, respectively, for Live Stock; whether the duties of these posts are really performed by the live stock auctioneers; and whether it is finally decided that no suitable occupants of these positions who are not of military age can be found in Scotland?

Mr. BECK

My right hon. Friend, on the urgent representations of the Noble Lord, the Minister of Food, concurred in the temporary exemption of these men from military service. I understand that they are still occupying the respective positions of Commissioner and Sub-Commissioners of Live Stock, the duties of which are entirely distinct from those of the live stock auctioneers, and that in present circumstances there does not appear to be any immediate prospect of finding suitable substitutes who are not liable to military service.
