HC Deb 21 March 1918 vol 104 c1204W
General Sir IVOR PHILIPPS

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office no what grounds the Army Council have closed the contract of Hall and Sons, Pembroke, for the supply of bread to the troops in that area; and whether he is aware that this firm have been supplying bread to the troops for the last fourteen years, and continuously during the present War, without any cause of complaint?

Mr. FORSTER

It was decided to supply the bread from an Army bakery at less cost. I have no reason to suppose that any complaint arose against the late contractors.

Sir I. PHILIPPS

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether local officers of the Army Service Corps have power to cancel contracts of long standing without any previous notice or warning, or whether such action can only be taken after reference to command headquarters?

Mr. FORSTER

The power to cancel depends upon the contract conditions in each case.
