Mr. FISHERThe total number of children under sixteen years of age on 29th December, 1917, maintained in Poor Law institutions (excluding casual wards) in England and Wales was 49,758, of whom 7,646 were in separate Poor Law institutions for the sick and 1,231 in separate Poor Law institutions for the mentally deficient. The number of children in receipt of Poor Law relief in non-Poor Law institutions on the same date was 12,216, including 992 lunatics in lunatic asylums.
