HC Deb 14 February 1918 vol 103 c279W
Mr. MARRIOTT

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he is aware that, despite the provisions of the Finance (New Duties) Act, 1916,1. 5 (6) and (d), the officials of the Customs Department have attempted to exact payment of the Entertainments Tax from the local organisers of lectures delivered under the authority of the University of Oxford in various provincial centres; and whether he will instruct the officials concerned to desist from interference with work which is purely educational?

Mr. BALDWIN

No case of the nature described has been brought to my notice, but if my hon. Friend will give me particulars of any case in which he thinks the Board of Customs and Excise are not acting in accordance with the provisions of the Statute referred to, I will inquire into the facts.
