HC Deb 14 March 1917 vol 91 cc1117-8W
Mr. BYRNE

asked the Home Secretary if he is aware of the proposals of the Government in regard to the further curtailment of the manufacture and output of beer and spirits in Ireland; if he is aware that its effect will be to partially destroy two of the remaining industries in Ireland; and if he will say whether the Government propose to adequately compensate all parties affected and to provide equivalent employment for the thousands who will be disemployed by reason of the Government's proposed action, or if the restrictions will be withdrawn?

Sir G. CAVE

I have this matter under immediate consideration with a view to making proposals which will mitigate so far as possible any hardship caused by the curtailment of the manufacture and output of beer and spirits; but I cannot hold out any hope that the restrictions announced by the Prime Minister will be withdrawn.
