HC Deb 14 March 1917 vol 91 c1113W
Sir A. GELDER

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether any special Department has been created for the purpose of dealing with Army waste products; whether such Department is controlled by experts in the recovery of waste; and, if so, will he supply the names of the experts and their qualifications?

Mr. FORSTER

The disposal of food residues is under the control of a branch of the Quartermaster-General's Department at the War Office. By-products suitable for the manufacture of glycerine are dealt with through a Committee approved by the War Office and largely composed of experts in the trade. The chairman is Mr. J. W. Hope, of John Knight and Co., Limited, and the hon. secretary and organiser is Mr. V. H. Poynter. For some time past a plant for dealing comprehensively with all food refuse has been at work in one of the large camps under the management of an expert, Mr. Gee, who has had considerable training and experience.
