§ Mr. MORRELLasked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether the present Regulations permit the infliction of first field punishment upon soldiers stationed in this country; whether he is aware that this punishment has recently been inflicted at the remount camp at Winchester; and if he will say for what offences it was awarded?
§ Mr. MACPHERSONThe law permits the infliction of field punishment No. 1 upon soldiers stationed in this country, but in August, 1914, instructions were issued by the Army Council directing that field punishment No. 1 should not be inflicted, but that if necessary field punishment No. 2 might be utilised. Possibly the hon. Member is confusing the two systems, but if he has still reason to suppose that irregularities have been permitted, I shall be happy to make inquiry if he will furnish me with particulars and names of the men concerned.
