HC Deb 05 July 1917 vol 95 cc1318-9W
Mr. P. WHITE

asked how many schools in Ireland have official residences attached for male and female teachers, respectively; how many teachers reside in houses of their own; and how many out of their own salary are obliged to rent residences?

Mr. DUKE

There are about 1,200 national schools in Ireland to which are attached residences for principal teachers provided by loans or Grants from State funds, but there is no record as to the number of these residences provided for men and for women teachers, respectively. There are about 1,110 national schools having residences for principal teachers provided without assistance from the State. There is no record as to the number of teachers who are in occupation of residences owned by themselves. In about 1,160 cases residences available are free of rent. There are about 5,270 ordinary national schools to which no residences for teachers are attached.

Mr. P. WHITE

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether, in the case where no official residence is attached to national schools in Ireland, and the teacher, coming from outside the district where his school is located, is compelled to pay in some cases exorbitant rent because of the scarcity of houses, he will, in order to give equality of treatment between those teachers who occupy official residences or have houses of their own, allow to those who are compelled to rent a house the equivalent of the rent they are obliged to pay?

Mr. DUKE

This is a matter to be dealt with in connection with the general question of teachers' remuneration on which I expect to make a statement next week.
