HC Deb 04 July 1917 vol 95 cc1118-9W
Colonel YATE

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether Danish bacon recently landed in this country was sold at 6d. per pound, and the same bacon was afterwards retailed to the public at a price up to as much as 2s. per pound; and, if so, whether he can state who were the people through whose hands this bacon passed, and what steps are being taken to prevent such profiteering in the future?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

Owing to heavy supplies of this bacon arriving simultaneously during hot weather it was found necessary to dispose of certain quantities at low prices, but I am not aware that any of the bacon so sold was afterwards retailed to the public at any such price as 2s. per pound. If the hon. and gallant Member will give me particulars, I will cause inquiries to be made.
