HC Deb 15 February 1917 vol 90 cc816-7W
Colonel STAVELEY-HILL

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether his attention had been called to the case of Private W. Watts, 49th Training Reserve Battalion, stationed at Prees Heath, Whitchurch, Salop, who at the time of his death was undergoing detention in the detention barracks at Stafford; whether he 16 aware that this man was suffering from, and under treatment for, anæmia and was subjected to No. 1 penal diet; and whether an inquiry will be held into this case?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I will have inquiries made into this case; but my hon. and gallant Friend must not misunderstand me as promising a special form of inquiry.

Mr. JOWETT

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War if he is aware that the regulations relating to detention barracks have been withdrawn from sale to the public; whether he will state the reason of this prohibition; and whether he will undertake that persons in litigation with the authorities for alleged ill-treatment at detention barracks shall be supplied with copies of these regulations for the purposes of preparing their cases for trial?

Mr. MACPHERSON

These regulations have not hitherto been placed on sale, as there has not been sufficient demand for them to warrant this being done. Any Member, however, who applies to the War Office for a copy will be supplied with one.
