HC Deb 12 February 1917 vol 90 cc283-4W
Mr. LUNDON

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland what is the standard weight per quarter fixed and the price to be paid for oats in Great Britain and Ireland, respectively; is there differentiation between the number of pounds to the bushel in England and Scotland as against Ireland, and, if so, what is the difference and why; and will he see that the prices fixed are regulated according to the Irish system, which is by the barrel, which contains 20 stones, and not by the bushel or by the quarter?

Mr. DUKE

The price fixed for oats of the first quality of the 1917 crop is 38s. 6d. for 336 1bs., in Great Britain and Ireland. There is no differentiation in this matter as between different parts of the United Kingdom, so that there appears to be no ground for adopting the suggestion made in the last part of the question. As will be seen, the oats will, in fact, be purchased throughout by weight and not by the bushel or quarter.
