Mr. T. WILSONasked the Postmaster-General what will be the work, pay, and conditions, respectively, of the women temporary sorters now serving in the Army postal service in this country who are being asked to volunteer for service in France; what steps are being taken to see that all necessary protection, accommodation, etc., are afforded these women; whether they have to sign any agreement; what are the terms of the agreement; and will they be allowed to return to work in this country if not satisfied with the conditions?
§ Mr. MACPHERSONThe rate of pay of women sorters to be employed in France is 26s. per week of forty-eight hours with overtime, and was settled in agreement with the General Post Office. Care will be taken to ensure the comfort and protection of the women. Welfare superintendents will also be appointed to supervise their welfare at the hostels where they will be accommodated. The woman has to sign an agreement, which binds her for twelve months or the period of the War, whichever is greater. My hon.
