Mr. A. RICHARDSONasked the Solicitor-General whether a landlord can increase the rent of his tenants during the period of the War; and, if the landlord does increase the rent during that period and the tenant refuses to pay the increased rent, can the landlord subsequently claim for arrears?
§ Sir G. HEWARTI understand that the question refers to dwelling-houses to which the Increase of Rent and Mortgage Interest (War Restrictions) Act, 1915, applies. If that be so, the answer to both parts of the question is in the negative. The matter is further dealt with in the Courts (Emergency Powers) Bill, which is at present before the House of Commons.
