HC Deb 21 November 1916 vol 87 cc1223-4W
Mr. GLANVILLE

asked the President of the Local Government Board why Horace J. Jones, a conscientious objector now serving six months' imprisonment in Wormwood Scrubs after court-martial at Mill Hill Barracks, has been refused his application to undertake work of national importance within the provisions of the Home Office scheme; if he is aware that the clerk to the Camberwell Tribunal suggested that a letter requesting Mr. Jones to find work of national importance had been forwarded to him, which letter Mr. Jones denies having received; and will he say why this man should have been sent to imprisonment because a letter had gone astray in the post, in spite of the fact that he is quite willing to undertake work under the direction of the Home Office Committee?

Mr. LONG

The facts do not appear to be as stated in the hon. Member's question. There is no record that a letter such as that mentioned was sent by the tribunal to the man. Moreover, I am informed that he has been offered work under the Home Office Committee, and has refused it.
