HC Deb 09 November 1916 vol 87 cc420-1W
Mr. SNOWDEN

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many of the 40 per cent. of vacancies in the first division establishment of the Inland Revenue are due to promotion from that class to the non-filling vacancies and to absences on military service, respectively; will he state whether any attempt has been made to fill these vacancies by promotion from the second division; and will he say, with regard to the Estate Duty Office, how many hours overtime per week per man have been worked by the 104 intermediate clerks under twenty-six years of age during the past six months?

Mr. McKENNA

The 40 per cent. mentioned in my answer of the 19th October to my hon. Friend represented a deficiency of ten men due to six vacancies and the absence of two men on military service and two men on loan to other public Departments. The vacancies have not been filled by examination, promotion, or otherwise. The system of paid overtime is not applicable to intermediate clerks of the Estate Duty Office, and the considerable number of extra hours worked have been put in voluntarily by those officers.
