HC Deb 14 March 1916 vol 80 cc1907-8W
Mr. FELL

asked the Secretary to the Admiralty why when leave is granted to a naval officer in the Mediterranean to return to England he should be charged full fare on the railway journey in England, whilst on the French railway he is carried at one quarter of the ordinary fare and in Italy he is conveyed free?

Dr. MACNAMARA

Officers and men of the Royal Navy proceeding on leave in the British Islands during the period of the War are entitled to free travelling facilities under certain conditions, but in the absence of details it is not possible to say whether the case of the officer in question comes within the scope of these conces- sions. When naval officers are not entitled to free travelling under the Regulations it is usual for them to avail themselves of a "leave form," which enables them to obtain a return ticket at the cost of single fare, i.e., they travel half fare.
