HC Deb 14 March 1916 vol 80 c1923W
Mr. ROWLANDS

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can state to what extent the substitution of electric lighting for gas lighting has taken place on the railways, and is the change being made at a satisfactory rate; and, if not, will the Board obtain powers to enforce its speedy adoption?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given to a similar question by the hon. Member for Deptford on the 13th January, in which it was stated that the railway companies generally had made considerable progress in effecting this change, but that the work had necessarily been interfered with owing to shortage of labour and material and other conditions caused by the War.
