HC Deb 02 March 1916 vol 80 c1230W
Mr. GINNELL

asked the Postmaster-General whether the telegraphic cable connecting the Aran Isles with the mainland of Galway, and essential to the proper carrying on of the fishing industry there, is under the control of the Post Office; and, if so, why he allows it to be kept inoperative this season as a means of forcing the young fishermen thus impeded in their work to enlist?

Mr. PIKE PEASE

The cable between Galway and the Aran Islands is maintained by the Post Office. It ceased to work on the 31st January. The Post Office cable ships have many repairs on hand, and the weather conditions have been very unfavourable for such work during February, but this cable will be repaired as soon as circumstances will allow. There is no foundation for the suggestion in the last paragraph.
