HC Deb 21 August 1916 vol 85 cc2288-9W
Mr. O'SHEE

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland if he will state under what circumstances Daniel Ronayne was convicted at Dungarvan, county Waterford, under the Defence of the Realm Act, and sentenced to one month's imprisonment; whether his offence was trifling; whether he is aware that the Dungarvan Urban Council passed a resolution calling for his release; and whether he will communicate with Sir John Maxwell on the subject?

Mr. DUKE

Daniel Ronayne was convicted at Waterford Petty Sessions on 21st July of using language prejudicial to recruiting and sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with hard labour. A resolution of the Dungarvan Urban District Council, in favour of the remission of the sentence, was laid before the Lords Justices, who decided that the law should take its course.
