HC Deb 21 August 1916 vol 85 cc2307-8W
Mr. BARNES

asked the Minister of Munitions if he is aware that there are many male members of the clerical staffs of controlled establishments whose work could very well be performed by women; whether these men are exempt from military service; and, if so, will he state what steps he proposes to take?

Dr. ADDISON

Employment in a controlled establishment does not of itself exempt a man from military service, and it is the practice of the Department only to grant badges to clerks who possess special technical knowledge, or who can be shown on other grounds to be indispensable. The Ministry are constantly engaged in revising the lists of men to whom badges have been issued, and I shall be happy to investigate any case that may appear to my hon. Friend to need special inquiry.
