asked the Secretary to the Treasury whether he will state the aggregate amount represented by those Bank of England notes that were issued more than forty years ago and have not been presented for payment, which amount, without prejudice to the validity of these notes, may be written off, for certain purposes of the Bank Charter Act, 1844, under Section 6 of the Bank Act, 1892?

Up to and including the amount of £17,615, shown in the Return presented to Parliament on the 15th November last, the total amount written off under Section 6 of the Bank Act, 1892, in respect of notes issued by the Bank of England since its incorporation is £795,166 19s. 3d.
