HC Deb 21 April 1915 vol 71 c274W
Colonel WARD

asked the Under-Secretary for War whether, in view of the fatal shooting of an officer on the 16th instant, he would consider the advisability of having all sentries on night duty provided with signalling lamps, owing to the impossibility of their challenge being heard by the occupants of motor ears and motor cycles?

Mr. TENNANT

Sentries have already been provided with lamps in many cases in which it was considered that they would be useful. The advisability of issuing one in every case where there is no objection to its use and where there might be advantage will be considered, but it must be added that the object of posting a sentry would often be defeated if he carried a lamp.
