asked the Home Secretary if lie can give the total number of the police forces in the United Kingdom under the following separate headings: Metropolitan police, City of London police, county police, city and borough police forces, arid Royal Irish Constabulary?

Mr. McKENNA

The authorised strength of the police, on the latest dates for which figures are available, was as follows: Metropolitan police, 21,104; City of London police, 1,231; other police forces in England and Wales: counties, 17,314; cities and boroughs, 18,321; police forces in Scotland: counties, 2,126; cities and burghs, 3,990; Royal Irish Constabulary, 10,480, and Dublin Metropolitan police, 1,177. These figures include Metropolitan police employed at dockyards and other stations and paid for by the Government, and police employed and paid for by companies and private persons.
