HC Deb 04 May 1914 vol 62 cc48-9W
Mr. AMERY

asked the Prime Minister when he proposes to fulfil his definite promise that he would publish the summarised record of the verbal instructions given to Sir A. Paget on 18th and 19th March, if such record existed, in view of the fact that its existence has been admitted by him?

The PRIME MINISTER

As the hon. Member desires to see the record of the verbal instructions to Sir A. Paget, I will give them; but they contain nothing beyond what has appeared in the White Paper, or has been stated in the House:—"At a meeting held this morning at the War Office it was decided that the following precautionary steps should be taken at once:—

  1. I. Troops should be sent to reinforce Omagh, Armagh, Dundalk, Enniskillen and Carrickfergus.
  2. II. The troops now in Belfast should be moved out to Holywood.—18.3.14.

At a meeting held at 10, Downing Street this afternoon it was decided that troops should be moved to reinforce Omagh, Armagh, Dundalk, Enniskillen and Carrickfergus; that the troops now in Belfast should be moved out to Holywood, leaving an adequate guard. The above moves to take place on Friday night.— 18.3.14"
