Mr. FELL

asked the Secretary to the Treasury if he will state the amount of the funds which the Road Board now has in hand; and how much of that fund has been hypothecated or earmarked for specific definite objects which are in course of being carried out?

Mr. MONTAGU

The total funds in the hands of the Road Board on 31st January, 1914, amounted to £2,833,747 14s. 7d. The aggregate amount granted and earmarked, or definitely indicated to highway authorities in excess of actual payments to 31st January, 1914, was £906,859 for Loans and £2,380,132 for Grants. The objects for which these Loans and Grants have been indicated are in course of execution or preparation by the highway authorities concerned, with the exception of the proposed Brentford loop road, for the construction of which powers are being sought by the County Council of Middlesex by a Bill now before Parliament.
