HC Deb 20 April 1914 vol 61 c592W
Mr. O'DOWD

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether he has received a resolution from the Tubbercurry District Council, county Sligo, calling for the appointment of a superintendent medical officer of health for that district; and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter?

Mr. BIRRELL

I have received a copy of the resolution referred to. The Tubbercurry Rural District Council at their meeting on the 12th January last decided to appoint a superintendent medical officer of health for the district at a salary of £40 a year. The Local Government Board suggested that a smaller salary might meet the ease, particularly as the margin of recoupment in respect of sanitary salaries in the district was only £10. Further representations having been made, the Board eventually approved of the council's proposal, on the condition that the officer selected for appointment would reside in the district. The Board consider that this condition is essential in the interest of the public health of the rural district, and they have informed the council that they cannot waive it.
