HC Deb 20 April 1914 vol 61 cc596-7W
Mr. GINNELL

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will ascertain and state the present condition of trade in Ulster, especially of banking, railway, and manufacturing companies whose business centres in Belfast, as shown by their

latest reports and the present prices of their securities, compared with the condition of trade generally, having regard to the check sustained in Ireland last year from a strike and an embargo on the export of cattle; and whether the condition of trade in Ulster is indicative of panic due to the imminence of civil war there?

Mr. BURNS

I do not think the inquiry suggested would serve a useful purpose. A certain amount of information bearing on the state of trade and employment in the area referred to will be found in the Board of Trade "Labour Gazette" just published. The matter referred to in the last part of the question is one on which the hon. Member must form his own opinion.
