HC Deb 23 June 1913 vol 54 cc808-9W
Mr. WEDGWOOD

asked the President of the Local Government Board, with reference to the Metropolitan area, how many houses have been built by the local authorities during the years 1901–11; and how many have been built by private enterprise in the same period?

Mr. BURNS

The precise figures which my hon. Friend asks for are not available. Local authorities do not build houses except for the working classes, and it may, therefore, be sufficient for his purposes if I state that, of the total number of tenements built for persons of the working class in London in the years 1902–11, which was 42,853, local authorities provided 7,866. These figures do not take into account the conversions into working class dwellings of houses formerly not occupied by the working class, nor the number of working class dwellings demolished or ceasing to be used for that purpose.
