HC Deb 31 July 1913 vol 56 cc747-8W
Sir DAVID BRYNMOR JONES

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that complaints arc made that there is no Labour Exchange at Morriston, in the county borough of Swansea; if he will cause an inquiry to be made as to whether these complaints are well founded; and whether it is expedient to make provision for a Labour Exchange in that part of the said borough?

Mr. ROBERTSON

I have received representations with regard to the establishment of a Labour Exchange in Morriston, and its claims will be carefully considered with those of other places when next the question of establishing additional Exchanges comes up for consideration.

Mr. GLAZEBROOK

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been drawn to the fact that Mr. James Howarth, a blouse manufacturer, finding female labour scarce in Manchester, asked the assistant manager of one of the Labour Exchanges whether there was any surplus labour in Warrington, and was told that he was not allowed to say; and whether this information may not be given at Labour Exchanges?

Mr. ROBERTSON

It is not part of the ordinary work of Labour Exchange officers to give general information of this kind, and they are instructed to refer such questions to headquarters before answering them. This appears to me to be a sound and necessary rule. I have now received a communication on the subject from Mr. Howarth, and am considering the matter with a view to giving him such assistance as is possible.
