§ Mr. FETHERSTONHAUGHasked the Chief Secretary whether the Government sanctioned the movement in the Royal Irish Constabulary to send in applications for increased pay; whether it is proposed to introduce a new Constabulary Act; if so, when that Bill will be introduced; and whether it is proposed to hold an inquiry into the question of pay and pension in the Royal Irish Constabulary, or will the evidence taken at the last inquiry be relied upon to cover the existing conditions under which the men serve and live?
§ Mr. BIRRELLThe regulations of the Royal Irish Constabulary lay down that, if any member of the force desires to make a representation regarding any matter in which his interests are affected, he is at liberty to do so through the usual official channel. All requests made to the constabulary authorities for permission to apply for increased pay have, therefore, been sanctioned and the applications, as received, have been submitted to the Irish Government, who will give them careful consideration. It is not proposed to introduce a Bill on the subject at present, or to hold an inquiry.
