HC Deb 11 February 1913 vol 48 cc741-2W
Mr. MOONEY

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has received a request from an association of workmen to open a Labour Exchange at Newry; and, if so, whether, in view of the working-class population residing in that district and the inconvenience that many of them are put to in having to go long distances to register, he will comply with the request?

Mr. BUXTON

I have received a resolution from the Newry Trades and Labour Council in favour of the establishment of a Labour Exchange in Newry. The case has been carefully considered, but I do not think that the establishment of an Exchange in the town would be justified. A local agency of the unemployment fund has been established at Newry for dealing with workmen in the insured trades, and workmen in other trades are at liberty to register their names at Dundalk by post from Newry.
