HC Deb 04 February 1913 vol 47 cc2005-6W
Mr. GORDON HARVEY

asked the Postmaster-General, if he is aware that, during the week ending 24th August, 1912, owing to local circumstances, which recur annually, the postmen in the Rochdale district worked overtime to the extent of as much as ten hours in some cases without receiving any extra payment; and will he provide in future for better arrangement of work and payment for such overtime?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

There is a general rule that overtime on prolonged deliveries, which cannot be checked, should not be paid for except in certain well-defined circumstances which did not obtain in the present instance. The question of additional relief during the holiday week this year will be considered in due course.
