HC Deb 04 February 1913 vol 47 c2007W
Mr. C. DUNCAN

asked the Postmaster-General whether it is the practice in the Savings Bank Department for clerks engaged upon overtime to be required either to forego the usual Saturday half-holiday or to sacrifice the pay for the first three hours of any overtime they may work; and, if so, when this practice was introduced?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

Officers who work beyond the normal attendance on the first five days of the week receive overtime pay in respect of the excess attendance. But the full scheduled day's attendance must be given on Saturday before overtime becomes payable in respect of excess attendance on that day. It was found in 1908 that a practice had grown up of paying certain officers in the Savings Bank for attendance beyond four hours on Saturday at overtime rates. This practice was regarded by the Post Office as being inconsistent with the provisions of the Order in Council in which the attendances were defined, and it was therefore discontinued early in 1909.
