HC Deb 21 October 1912 vol 42 c1732W
Mr. CHARLES DUNCAN

asked the Secretary to the Treasury whether he is aware that no consideration has been accorded those first-class examining officers of Customs who were, prior to the amalgamation of the Customs and Excise services, acting for considerable periods as surveyors of Customs, and which position was, at the time of their so acting, far superior to the present grade of surveyor; and whether these men, many of whom now occupy important positions which involve supervision, are to be offered the opportunity of becoming surveyors of Customs and Excise under the new conditions?

Mr. MASTERMAN

I am informed that it is not the case that no consideration has been given to these officers. Promotions are being made to the new surveyor grade, subject to efficiency, in accordance with the announcement of my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer in May last, and each first-class examining officer is considered in his turn under usual rules.
