§ Viscount WOLMERasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons were convicted for criminal offences last year in England and Wales?
§ Mr. McKENNAThe number of persons convicted as shown in the Judicial Statistics is 538,750; 10,645 were convicted on indictment, the rest summarily. The number of individuals concerned is probably much smaller, as the same person may have been convicted several times, especially in the case of such offences as drunkenness, begging, and solicitation.
