HC Deb 25 November 1912 vol 44 cc850-1W
Mr. CROOKS

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether, before sanctioning the draft Order for Poor Law institutions which his Departmental Committee has prepared or is preparing, he will see that provisions are inserted making clear the right of married women to apply for and obtain admission to the workhouse for themselves and their children when destitute and the right of a destitute child, or of a police officer or other person under whose charge the destitute child may temporarily Be, to apply for and obtain admission to the workhouse, and preventing the guardians or their officers from turning children under the age of sixteen out of the workhouse when such action is likely to result in injury to the health of the child or failure to obtain adequate food or clothing?

Mr. BURNS

The Departmental Committee have not yet submitted to me their proposals on the subject which they are now considering, but before any action is taken on their recommendations I will take care that the two points referred to by my hon. Friend are carefully considered.
