HC Deb 25 November 1912 vol 44 c847W
Mr. KELLAWAY

asked the Under-Secretary for India whether the Governor-General has received from Mr. Arnold, now in prison for libelling a magistrate at Rangoon; an appeal for a retrial; and, if so, whether the Governor-General will use his powers to have such appeal transferred to Calcutta?

Mr. HAROLD BAKER

The Secretary of State is not aware that an appeal for a retrial has been made by Mr. Arnold to the Governor-General. The Governor-General has no power to order a retrial, nor would the Calcutta High Court have jurisdiction to deal with an appeal of the kind.
