HC Deb 04 November 1912 vol 43 cc848-9W
Mr. NIELD

asked the Secretary to the Treasury whether the Royal Commission now inquiring into the method of making appointments to the Civil Service is likely to present an interim Report, and, if so, when it may be expected; in the event of no interim Report being made, when may the final Report be expected; and whether he will consider the advisability of granting facilities for the officials comprised in the legal appointments to present their case before the Commissioners without detriment to their prospects of promotion?

Mr. MASTERMAN

The Royal Commission presented an interim Report in May last covering certain portions of the evidence given before them, and I understand that a second interim Report will be issued shortly. The Royal Commission has invited evidence from any officer serving in or retired from the public service who desires to make representations on matters within their terms of reference, and I am not aware of any ground for the apprehension expressed in the last part of the question.
