HC Deb 14 March 1912 vol 35 cc1409-10W
Mr. WILES

asked the Postmaster-General whether telegraph messengers, having attained the age of eighteen years, have been appointed to a position at Holloway Telegraph Factory, and then when, the first increment in their wages becomes due have been dismissed through slackness of work; and, if so, will he state the number so discharged?

HERBERT SAMUEL

Within the last eighteen months ten ex-telegraph messengers have been discharged from work at the Holloway Telegraph Factory after periods of trial varying from four to eleven months. In nine cases the discharge was due to indifferent conduct or want of aptitude, and in one to physical unfitness. All the boys were under seven-

teen when discharged. In no case was the discharge due to slackness of work.
