Mr. CHANCELLORasked the Postmaster-General (1) whether his reply to the hon. Member for South Islington, on 24th November last, that he hoped to put the supervision of the Returned Letter Office, London, on a more satisfactory footing is still in contemplation; (2) whether he has recently received memorials from the staff of the Returned Letter Office, London, in reference to the reorganisation of that Department, and, if so, have any replies been sent to them; if not, can any information be furnished as to when a reply will be given; and (3) whether he is aware of the unrest and dissatisfaction prevailing among the staff of the Returned Letter Office, London, in consequence of the recent proposals to make the various classes at this office redundant without adequate compensation for loss of prospects; and, if so, what action he proposes to take?
§ Mr. HERBERT SAMUELThe revised arrangements at the Returned Letter Office were carried out on 1st January last. I have received memorials from the staff of the Returned Letter Office. Some I have answered, and I will give replies to the rest as soon as possible. I am sorry that changes which were considered to be imperative could not be effected without causing a certain amount of disappointment.
