asked the Under-Secretary of State for India the salary of the members of the Council of the Secretary of State for India; how much of their time is occupied in their official duties; are any of the members connected with public or other companies as directors or otherwise in this country or in India; were they selected as expert advisers; and were any of the members present on behalf of the India Office at the conference with the European delegates in connection with the proposed railway to India cross Persia?

The salary of the members of the Secretary of State's Council appointed before the passing of the Council of India Act, 1907, is £1,200 a year; the salary of members appointed subsequently is £1,000 a year. They are not subject, as are members of the Civil Service, to fixed hours of attendance. The answer to the third and fourth parts of the hon. Member's question is in the affirmative, to the last part in the negative.
