HC Deb 18 June 1912 vol 39 cc1634-5W
Mr. MACPHERSON

asked the Under Secretary of State for India, whether the attention of the Secretary of State has been drawn to the paragraph in the Annual Report of the Curators of the Indian Institute at Oxford, in which they say that unless further funds are available they will, before long, be unable to purchase any books for the library of the Institute; does the Indian Office make any grant for the purpose at the present moment; and what steps it is proposed to take in the matter, in view of the part played by the Indian Institute in promoting the Oriental studies of the probationers for the Indian Civil Service who are from time to time in residence at the University of Oxford?

Mr. MONTAGU

The Secretary of State has just received the report referred to. The part played by the Indian Institute at Oxford is recognised by an annual grant of £150 from Indian revenues; this sum is in addition to the annual grant of £500 made to the University of Oxford in consideration of the teaching given to Selected Candidates for the Civil Service of India. I may also mention that books and periodicals have been from time to time presented to the Institute since its foundation, and that since 1909 it has been presented with all the official publications of the Government of India and the Indian Local Governments, whether published in India or in England.
