HC Deb 17 June 1912 vol 39 cc1454-5W
Mr. PIKE PEASE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he will state the expenditure, or proposed expenditure, on new construction and armaments for 1911–12 and 1912–13 for Great Britain, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, France, and the United States respectively?

Dr. MACNAMARA

The expenditure, estimated or actual, in the case of Great Britain is as follows:—

New Construction. Armaments.
£ £
1911–12 (estimate, revised) 12,479,881 2,580,000
1912–13 (estimate) 13,971,527 2,476,000

With regard to the other countries named, I am afraid I cannot give the precise figures for new construction and armaments separately. Taking these two headings together, the figures asked for are as follows:—

1911–12. 1912–13.
£ £
Germany 11,710,859§ 11,637,959*||
Austria-Hungary 3,125,000§ 3,625,000†||

France 5,876,659§ 6,997,582||
United States 5,343,789§ 4,998,145||
* Includes £97,847 for airships and experiments with airships.
† Includes £4,167 for air-craft.
‡ To this should be added a portion of a sum of £680,000 made available by the 1911 Navy Law, but no information is available as to the exact amount for new construction and armaments.
§ Amount voted.
|| Amount proposed, including supplementary estimates in the case of France and Germany.
