HC Deb 13 June 1912 vol 39 c1180W
Mr. EDGAR JONES

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that firemen and deputies who have been compelled to take examinations under the new Mines Act have been charged a fee of 10s.; and whether he can see his way to remit this charge for the first set of examinations?

Mr. McKENNA

All the institutions and authorities which have been approved by me for the purpose of granting certificates to firemen under the new Act have agreed to a scale of fees for the examinations, under which the maximum fee for a fireman employed at the passing of the Act will not exceed 5s., and for future firemen will not exceed 7s. 6d. The fees are charged for the purpose only of defraying the actual expenses incurred in conducting the examinations, and go to the approved institutions. I have no power under the Act to remit the fees or to provide for their being paid out of public funds.
