HC Deb 10 June 1912 vol 39 c654W
Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether Mineral Rights Duty is being collected on rock salt and brine; and, if so, what were the proceeds of the taxes on those minerals for the year ending 5th April, 1912?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

Mineral Rights Duty is held to be payable in respect of both rock salt and brine. The yield of duty in respect of rock salt for the year ended the 31st March, 1912, was approximately £217. As regards brine, the question of its liability is to be the subject of an appeal, and no duty has been collected pending the decision of the Courts on the matter.

Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what amount of money has been received in the year ending 5th April, 1912, in respect of the Mineral Rights Duty upon fire-clay?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

Fire-clay is frequently worked in conjunction with coal and other minerals, and the returns made by the mineral owner often do not specify the amount of royalty received in respect of each separate mineral. In these circumstances the information asked for by the hon. Member is not available.
