HC Deb 10 June 1912 vol 39 cc651-2W
Mr. HARRIS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the Federation of Laundry Associations has been refused a representative upon the Advisory Committee under the National Insurance Act; and whether he is aware that such federation represents one of the largest industries employing female workers?

Mr. MASTERMAN

As I stated in answer to the hon. Member for Wands-worth on 22nd May, a laundry manageress who was recommended by the Federation of Laundry Associations, was appointed a member of the English Advisory Committee on 16th April.

Mr. NEVILLE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that the National Combined Insurance Staffs Committee, representing those engaged in collecting industrial and other insurance premiums, applied to the Insurance Commissioners to be allowed representation on the Advisory Committee to the Insurance Commissioners; whether he is aware that the Insurance Commissioners, while granting full representation to the officials of trade unions and friendly societies and the directorates and management committees of insurance companies and collecting friendly societies, refused to grant representation on such committee to collectors and, if so, for what reason; and whether he will ask the Insurance Commissioners to reconsider their refusal?

Mr. MORRELL

asked the Secretary to the Treasury whether he has received protests from the workers of existing insurance societies against their inadequate representation upon the Advisory Committee to the Insurance Commissioners; and whether he can say why the claims of the National Combined Insurance Staffs Committee for such representation were ignored?

Mr. MASTERMAN

I have nothing to add to the answers I have already given to the hon. Gentlemen for Northampton, Pontefract, West Leeds, Oldham, and South Bristol on 15th May, 4th, 5th, and 6th June.

Sir HENRY KIMBER

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the nomination of a laundry manageress has been accepted by the National Insurance Commissioners to serve on the Advisory Committee in the interests of the female workers; whether the member nominated by the Federation of Laundry Associations to serve on the Advisory Committee in the interests of the employers has been refused; and whether he will take steps to procure the adequate representation on the Advisory Committee of both employers and employés in the laundry trade, which is the third largest industry employing female workers in the non-textile trades of this country?

Mr. MASTERMAN

The laundry manageress referred to was not appointed to represent the interests of the employés as distinct from those of the employers; on the contrary, she was appointed on the recommendation of the Federation of Laundry Associations, which is an Employers' Federation.
