HC Deb 24 July 1912 vol 41 cc1186-7W
Mr. GINNELL

asked whether the Local Government Board for Ireland are aware of the means whereby Mr. Bernard Daly, member of the county council and of a district council in Westmeath, induced those two bodies not to oppose his claim for compensation for damage to a pump caused by his own design or negligence; whether any person was arrested or punished in connection with the occurrence or any personal or local illwill towards Mr. Daly was disclosed in the case; and, in view of his desire for profit, shown by his claim of £50, reduced by the Court to £17, though unopposed, and of the natural consequence of leaving claims of members of public bodies untested, whether the Board will suspend the collection of this money from the ratepayers pending further inquiry?

Mr. BIRRELL

Beyond the fact that a claim for compensation was made by Mr. Daly, the Local Government Board have no information regarding the matter referred to. The Board cannot interfere with the decree of a Court.
