§ Mr. WATTasked the Lord Advocate whether the Sheriff-Substitute of Inverness-shire, at Fort William, who recently retired was able to speak and understand Gaelic; whether it has been found essential in the administration of justice in that neighbourhood that the Sheriff should have a; knowledge of that language; and whether the new appointee is a fluent speaker in that tongue?
Mr. McKINNON WOODA knowledge of Gaelic has not in practice been found essential in the administration of justice at Fort William; but as a matter of fact both the late and the present Sheriff-Substitute have such knowledge.
