HC Deb 23 February 1912 vol 34 cc965-6W
Mr. CASSEL

asked the Postmaster-General on what principle applications for the positions of girl messengers in the Post Office are dealt with, and by whom appointments are made?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

Girl probationers, as the officers in question are called, are selected by postmasters and heads of departments from among candidates whose physical and mental qualities create a probability of fitness not only for the work immediately required but for the established posts in which it is proposed to absorb them. It has been arranged to try the experiment of selecting them at certain towns by the aid of the Junior Advisory Committees formed in connection with the Labour Exchanges, but this experiment is scarcely in full operation yet.
