HC Deb 21 February 1912 vol 34 cc709-10W
Mr. HADDOCK

asked the President of the Board of Agriculture, whether, in view of the proposals of the Saskatchewan Government to grant assisted passages and other inducements for emigration, which may bring about a further depletion of labour in the agricultural districts of this country, he has in view any proposals for retaining this supply of labour to British farmers?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

The subject is not one which can be conveniently discussed by question and answer, but I may refer to the fact that under the Development and Road Improvement Funds Act of 1909, considerable sums of money have recently been made available and are now being devoted to the development of the agricultural industry. These and other recent legislative and administrative changes should have the effect of increasing both the number and the remuneration of the labouring population in the rural districts. I shall certainly keep so desirable an object steadily in view.
